The Burden of the Lord

How the Chief Musician Alliance was born from the heart of longing.

For over 25 years, my journey through various music ministries has been a tapestry woven with diverse experiences, each contributing to the fabric of my understanding of worship. From the humble beginnings of drumming in my father’s small Southern Baptist church to leading worship for youth groups and traditional hymn services, my path eventually led me to the role of a Chief Musician in a congregation that cherishes a blend of classic and contemporary hymns. It’s within this mosaic of musical diversity that the seeds of the Chief Musician Alliance were sown.

The term “Chief Musician” resonated deeply with me, drawn from my readings in Psalms. Delving deeper into its significance, I found inspiration to ground my ministry in this ancient tradition. But as I journeyed through different musical landscapes, I couldn’t help but notice the overpowering influence of mainstream mega-churches on social media, shaping the narrative of what a music ministry should look like.

It was in response to this observation that I felt compelled to articulate the principles guiding our music ministry, encapsulated in what I’ve come to call the “Asaph Creed.” This creed is not just a set of rules but a roadmap rooted in biblical truths, guiding us toward a music ministry that is both scripturally grounded and spiritually enriching.

The burden I carry, and what I believe is the Lord’s burden, is for local church music ministries to thrive in fidelity to their unique callings while embracing the richness and potential of a vibrant music ministry. I aim to encourage pastors, church musicians, and congregants alike to grasp the magnitude of music ministry when executed with authenticity and devotion.

As the Chief Musician Alliance takes shape, there are countless ideas and initiatives in development, all aimed at revitalizing music ministries across our nation. I eagerly anticipate sharing these endeavors in due time. In the meantime, I invite readers to join us in prayer, asking for God’s hand in igniting a revival within our music ministries. Together, let us envision church music leaders who are passionate about cultivating environments where congregations can truly encounter the presence of God.

If you share in this vision or have insights to contribute, I welcome your outreach. Let us embark on this journey together, guided by the burden of the Lord, towards a renaissance of authentic worship through music in our churches.
